SST Pure Aligned In 2010

JUPITER, Fla. - Players who have had their clubs SST PURE aligned won 43 times on the PGA Tour this season and combined to take home more than $159 million. The results demonstrate the level of commitment Tour players maintain to use the best-performing equipment available.

Performed on clubs from any manufacturer, SST PURE shaft alignment technology analyzes the structural irregularities that exist to some degree in every golf shaft and locates the shaft's most stable orientation. By assembling the club with the shaft in its SST PURE® orientation, off-line bending and twisting of the shaft are minimized and impact repeatability on the center of the clubface by the golfer improves by up to 51 percent.

New Advances In Breathable, Waterproof Materials

November 19, 2010

Adventure Blog has a neat article covering a slew of new materials that will challenge Gore-Tex in the waterproof-breathable market. While the article is about camping equipment, you can be sure that it’ll find its way to golf.

For the past 30 years, the waterproof-breathable market could be summed up in two words (or is that one hyphenated one?): Gore-Tex. No more. Gore’s might is about to be tested by no less than three of the outdoor world’s largest brands. The roll-out begins this spring with Columbia’s Omni-Dry then flows through to fall 2011 when Polartec’s NeoShell and Mountain Hardware’s DryQ arrive. And Gore itself isn’t sitting still, with a new product, Active Shell, the promises greater breathability. It’s the biggest wave of new waterproof-breathables from major brands in, well, ever.

Ping S56 Irons Notch Two Wins

November 17, 2010; Phoenix, Arizona -- Two more wins last weekend on the LPGA and Sunshine Tours gave the new PING® S56™ irons 12 victories worldwide since the players' style model first arrived on Tour in late June, the company announced today.

The wins have come in eight countries, including the United States (4 wins), France (2), Switzerland (1), Scotland (1), Spain (1), South Africa (1), Mexico (1) and Singapore (1).

"We've never seen such instant acceptance and success for a new product on Tour," said PING Chairman & CEO John Solheim. "We're extremely pleased so many players have switched and seen immediate results. Our Tour reps are getting a lot of requests for the S56 irons right now from players all over the world. We're more than happy to accommodate all the requests."

PING pro In-Kyung (I.K.) Kim was the first to win on the LPGA Tour with the S56 irons last week at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. The 22-year-old South Korean fired a final-round 64 for a record-setting 19-under total. The winner of the BMG Classic on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa last weekend also relied on the new irons, putting them in the bag for the first time only hours before the first round.

In a remarkable gesture, Kim donated her $220,000 winner's check to two charities, including $110,000 to the Lorena Ochoa Foundation.

"When I read that I.K. had donated all of her winnings, I was touched by her incredible generosity," said Solheim. "She was inspired to make the donation after meeting some of the children who attend a school set up by Lorena and her foundation. We're proud to be associated with players like I.K. and Lorena who recognize the opportunity they have to give back to the game."

More than 40 Tour players worldwide have switched to the S56 irons since they debuted at Pebble Beach during the U.S. Open. Three PING professionals, including Gregory Havret and Louis Oosthuizen, put the new irons straight in the bag that week. Havret went on to place second, finishing one shot back. A month later, Oosthuizen dominated the British Open, winning by seven shots using the S56 irons. Three of the victories have come on the PGA Tour, where the new irons became the most-used model of any PING iron by the end of the season.

Doak, Crenshaw, Coore Build Unique Project

Tom Doak, Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore Building Side-by-Side on Unique Former Mining Site in Central Florida Polk County, Fla.-Coore & Crenshaw and Tom Doak-led Renaissance Golf Design will create two highly distinctive, yet intertwined, 18-hole golf courses on a formerly mined phosphate site in Central Florida.

The designers were intrigued by the opportunity to utilize mined land and to work side-by-side on their two courses at Streamsong Resort, a 16,000-acre project being developed by The Mosaic Company, the world's leading producer and marketer of phosphate-based crop nutrients. The resort is located in southern Polk County, Fla., between Tampa and Orlando.

Both architectural firms will leverage their experience working on unique, sandy sites to design two intersecting, world-caliber golf courses that are being developed concurrently. The topography of the land-which features appealing elevations and dramatic contours left from the mining process - will make for a challenging, dramatic and aesthetically fulfilling golf atmosphere.

"This land is naturally conducive to uncovering great golf holes," said Ben Crenshaw of Coore & Crenshaw. "It is going to be spectacular, and has its own inherent character that will translate into two memorable courses."

"This is such a good piece of land for golf," said Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design. "The variety of contours created by the mining process is unique for a project in Florida, or anywhere in the Southeast. I have been friends with Bill and Ben for many years, and it is great fun to be working right alongside them. I think it will bring out the best work in each of us."

According to Bill Coore, "Through the years, Ben and I have been fortunate to work on a number of exceptional sites that were naturally gifted for golf. These sandy

sites brought forth the Sand Hills Golf Club in Nebraska, Bandon Trails in Oregon, Friar's Head Golf Club in New York and Lost Farm in Tasmania, Australia.

"At Streamsong," he added, "we have the opportunity to work with a site that contains some of the most unusual, interesting and dramatic land forms we have ever encountered. From its towering dunes, sandy fields, and pristine lakes, we believe this land has the potential to yield two extraordinary golf courses. Being able to work alongside Tom Doak and our good friends at Renaissance Golf Design to simultaneously create the two courses makes this a very special project indeed."

Following critically acclaimed successes in Oregon and Tasmania, Australia, Streamsong will represent only the third location in the world where architecturally relevant venues have been created by the Coore-Crenshaw and Doak design teams. Construction of the two golf courses began in mid-2010; they are expected to be available for limited play in mid to late 2012. The courses will be available for play to resort guests and have a variety of programs making play available to the public, including local and national memberships.

In addition to world-class golf courses, Streamsong will also feature a golf clubhouse with meeting space, a pro shop and a casual dining restaurant; approximately 140 guest rooms in the main resort building (with the potential for expansion to more than 200 rooms); five separate villas-each with four private guest rooms adjoining a common gathering area; more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space; two additional restaurants and two lounge areas; a full-service spa; hiking and nature trails; a sporting clays range; and unparalleled Florida bass fishing.

TrackMan Performance Now Available For Tight Spaces

VedbÆk, Denmark, November 19, 2010 - TrackMan's swing and ball flight monitor now achieves our industry-leading performance with just 10 feet of ball flight - a major breakthrough for indoor golf centers, retailers, academies, golf clubs, and private home clients.

The breakthrough is TrackMan's new ability to measure spin rate in less space - specifically 10 feet of ball flight. Unlike some other launch monitor technologies that estimate and imply spin rate, TrackMan has always directly measured the spin rate of the golf ball. With TrackMan now able to precisely measure spin rate in such a short distance (driver at 10 feet), facilities with limited space can now take advantage of TrackMan's cutting-edge technology.

Fredrik Tuxen, TrackMan co-founder and CTO: "Measuring spin directly and accurately is important for a number of reasons. First of all, knowing a golfer's ball spin rate is essential when making driver fitting recommendations. If you do not track the ball for the entire flight, as is the case indoors, the results of a ball flight model will be significantly impacted by the preciseness of the spin rate entered into the model."

To illustrate Tuxen's point, imagine a golfer hits a drive with a ball speed of 150 mph, launch angle of 13 degrees, and spin rate of 3000 rpm. According to the laws of physics (and assuming a premium golf ball), the ball will travel approximately 255 yards, including bounce and roll.

TrackMan has seen other technologies estimate spin rate without indicating the measurement is in fact, an estimate. In such cases, the spin rate estimate commonly has a margin of error of +- 1000 rpm. The result: if you enter a mistakenly measured 2000 or 4000 rpm in a ball flight model, rather than the correctly measured 3000 rpm, the resulting drive distance would be calculated to travel either 276 or 230 yards- a discrepancy of 46 yards. Club-fitting sessions having a spin rate margin of error this great result in misleading and poor equipment recommendations.

For club fitting as well as practicing, being able to represent golf shot results accurately is imperative. This is why the precise measurement of spin rate is so important and why this upgrade represents such a significant breakthrough. Now, facilities with limited space can provide the same level of service as larger centers.

"We are very excited to announce this technological advancement. With it, TrackMan continues to stay at the forefront of the market in its ability to directly and accurately measure spin," says Fredrik Tuxen.

About TrackMan
TrackMan™ is a completely portable, easy to use radar-based solution for analyzing the golf swing and the resulting ball flight. The choice of the PGA TOUR, USGA, and R&A, it provides the industry's most accurate real-time data and graphics on club movement, ball launch, ball flight, and landing. Headquartered in VedbÆk, Denmark, TrackMan A/S is the developer and owner of TrackMan™ technology.

He began the day tied for the lead but his sensational play took him to two strokes ahead of Australia's Brendan Jones. His 14-under 274 locked in Ishikawa's ninth win on the Japan Golf Tour.

The Japanese phenom wears a variety of Trion:Z wristbands and necklaces in accordance to what he is wearing but for the most part he dons the Trion:Z Necklace Lite. How To Line Up Your Fourth Putt and When To Regrip Your Ball Retriever Book Reviews

How To Line Up Your Fourth Putt and When To Regrip Your Ball Retriever
by Bobby Rusher

Grade: B+
Teacher’s Comments: A nice holiday gift

How To Line Up Your Fourth Putt and When To Regrip Your Ball Retriever are two of the funniest book titles I’ve ever read, and for the most part the contents live up to the billing.

Presented as overly large instruction manuals, complete with spiral binding on top, each page contains a short and mostly funny “lesson” on golf. Mostly funny. A few are genuinely side splitting; a majority were amusing; a few left me utterly indifferent. But while the lessons themselves were for me a mixed lot, the titles are consistently entertaining and well worth the price of admission. A few gems:

“How To Hit a Dunlop 2 From the Rough On Your Second Shot When You Hit A Titleist 1 From The Tee.”

“How To Duck Hook From The Bunker And Still Get Home In 10”

“How To Feel Good About Yourself When Your Biggest Lifetime Drive Was 117”

“What To Do When You’ve Parred The Course By The 11th Hole”

“How To Find A Ball That Everyone Else Saw Go In The Water”

Now that’s funny stuff.

Overall, I’d recommend these books for the golfer on your holiday gift list. They’re just $18 each—a nice price for a gift.

There’s just one caveat. I didn’t really care for the format. I’m no tree hugger, but I thought the fact that the text was printed on just one side of each page was a waste of trees. Worse, the text on some of those pages consumed less than a quarter of the space. I would really have liked to see the 8x10 format of the book shrunk to a more reasonable pocket size. That would also have made more plausible the joke that they’re actually instruction manuals.

SuperStroke Golf Ends Banner Year

At the last official PGA Tour event of 2010, SuperStroke put the icing on their best ever year on the world's professional golf tours. A player using a SuperStroke Slim grip ranked 1st in Putts Per GIR with an average of 1.592 at the Children's Miracle Network Classic. Six total players used a SuperStroke oversized grip at the Disney event, making the company the #1 Jumbo Putter Grip for every PGA Tour event held in 2010.

On the European Tour last week, a former major champion who recently won the Korea Open on the Asian Tour with a Slim grip, ranked T7th in Putts Per Round at the Singapore Open with the jumbo putter grip designed to promote a pendulum stroke.

This year on the PGA, Champions, Nationwide, LPGA and Asian tours, SuperStroke and Tiger Shark putter grips have been a part of 3 victories, 24 Top 10 finishes and 39 Top 25 finishes. The victories came on the PGA Tour at the Reno-Tahoe Open by SuperStroke spokesman Matt Bettencourt, on the Champions Tour in the bag of Monday qualifier who bought the SuperStroke grip at a retail shop, and with the former PGA Champion who recently won the Korea Open. SuperStroke and Tiger Shark now have 9 victories on the PGA Tours.

Other 2010 Highlights

Over 80 PGA Tour professionals have now put SuperStroke technology into play on the PGA, Champions, Nationwide and LPGA tour's. SuperStroke and Tiger Shark Golf have combined to be the #1 jumbo putter grips at every PGA Tour event, including The Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

Matt Bettencourt, a first time winner on the 2010 PGA Tour, finished T8th on the PGA Tour in Putts Per Round with an average of 28.46 Putts Per Round using a SuperStroke Fatso grip all season long.

KJ Choi had his best year since winning two events with his SuperStroke grip in 2007. Choi finished 15th in the FedEx Cup standings and had 9 Top 25 finishes in 2010, including a 4th place finish at The Masters, a 2nd place finish at the Transitions Championship, a T3 at the BMW Championship and a T7th at the Tour Championship.

A Monday qualifier using a SuperStroke Slim putter grip won the AT&T Championship on the Champions Tour October 31. The win was the first by a Monday qualifier on the Champions Tour in six years

A Champions Tour rookie, former major winner and 4-time Ryder Cup USA member had 11 Top 25 finishes with a combination of SuperStroke Slim and Fatso grips. The player finished 17th on the Charles Schwab Cup points in only 14 events after placing T6, T16, T14, T24, 2nd, 4th, T15, T3rd T6th, T4th, and T13th since putting a SuperStroke in play in June. He ranked 14th in Putts Per Round for the season.

Four players in the Top 30 on the final PGA Tour Fed Ex Cup standings put a SuperStroke grip into play, including the #1 overall money leader on the 2010 PGA Tour. More and more big names put a SuperStroke grip into play in 2010, with four former major winners choosing to play a SuperStroke on a regular basis.

A 15-year-old prodigy that turned pro in 2010 on the LPGA Tour finished tied for 10th at the U.S. Women's Open with a SuperStroke Slim jumbo putter grip.

Tiger Shark Golf Finishes 1st in Putting at The Masters - The player who finished tied for 14th at The Masters played a Tiger Shark Golf Great White putter and Tiger Shark oversized putter grip, leading him to only 109 total putts, and the #1 ranking in putting at the 2010 Masters. The putter and grip combination led the player to finish 3 putts better than the next closest competitor.

LPGA Hall of Famer and Tiger Shark Golf staff player Juli Inkster finished 2nd at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament. She came within inches of breaking the LPGA Tour age record at 50 years old. Inkster, who designed a women's set for Tiger Shark, had two Top finishes this year on the LPGA.

GolfNow's Loustalot To Speak

GolfNow's Loustalot to Discuss Ways to Use the Internet To Increase Revenues at Irish Golf Business Conference ORLANDO, Fla. (Nov. 17, 2010) - Mike Loustalot, vice president of sales for Golf Channel Solutions, will discuss ways golf courses can increase revenues through online tee time reservation services and yield management strategies at the 2010 Golf Business Conference in Dublin. The Nov. 19 conference, billed as "The Road to Recovery," is designed to help courses find ways to overcome the effects of Ireland's severe economic slowdown on the golf industry.

"The Internet is not going away, and Irish owners and operators should embrace it as a tool that can help fill their tee sheets and increase the revenue opportunities that every tee time offers," said Loustalot, who co-founded Golf Channel's GolfNow.com online tee time service in 2002 and has been involved in marketing tee times online since 1998.

Citing consumers' use of online reservation portals in the travel, dining and entertainment industries, Loustalot said golfers' adoption of online tee time services managed by third-party marketers is "inevitable."

"Consumers expect to be able to purchase whatever they want whenever they want to buy," Loustalot said. "The challenge for today's golf course operators is to make their product easily accessible to consumers who have multiple leisure time options and are looking for value in every purchase."

Loustalot is among a number of respected golf and financial experts, including Dermot Desmond, chairman of IIU, an international private investment firm; Charles P. (Buddy) Darby, CEO of Kiawah Development Partners; and Marty Carr, chief executive of the Carr Group, one of Europe's leading golf travel operators; who are scheduled to speak at the conference.

A service of Golf Channel, GolfNow.com uses its broad marketing and distribution resources to help golfers search for available tee times and make reservations that fit their schedules and budgets. In 2009, golfers booked 3.8 million rounds through the GolfNow.com site, generating more than $121 million in online revenues for partner courses. The service is now available at more than 2,400 courses in more than 50 U.S. markets.

About GolfNow.com

GolfNow.com is the Internet's largest and most comprehensive online tee time booking service. Since its launch in 2001, GolfNow.com has expanded to more than 50 U.S. markets and now provides tee time access to more than 2,200 courses for nearly 1 million registered users. The site's demand-based Dynamic Pricing Engine™ puts operators in complete control of their tee sheets and pricing. GolfNow.com is powered by Golf Channel, which is seen in 82.1 million homes and by 15 million monthly viewers; as well as by GolfChannel.com, the Internet's No. 1 golf destination. The service is part of GolfChannel.com's online platform of Internet sites designed to help the recreational player enjoy every aspect of the game.

Timacuan Golf Club Gets New Owner

LAKE MARY, FL - While bad economic news continues to dominate the news both locally and nationally, some good news was delivered recently to Orlando-area golfers.

Timacuan Golf Club, one of Central Florida's most popular and highly ranked courses, has been purchased by Timacuan Partners Ltd. Terms of the sale between Timacuan Partners and Kitson & Partners were not disclosed.

"Timacuan is a premier facility in every respect," said a spokesperson for new owners. "Our plan is to improve upon what is already an outstanding experience for all those who utilize the facility."

Timacuan, a semi-private club, was designed in 1987 by Ron Garl and refurbished by Bobby Weed in 1996. The par-72 track features two distinctly different nines, and is traditionally ranked among the top 20 courses in Florida. It has proven to be a popular choice for corporate outings and charity events, thanks in part to the outstanding clubhouse.

TImacuan has hosted many top tier events. The Champions Tour held its Monday Qualifiers at Timacuan in 2008 and 2009, the Hooters Tour makes annual stops at Timacuan, and this great course has hosted numerous U.S. Open Local Qualifiers.

Traditionally ranked among the Top 20 courses in Florida, Timacuan offers a world-class blend of unique golf holes, challenging golf shots, and scenic beauty all near Orlando. The front nine holes - one of the strongest opening nines you will find anywhere in the state - sweeps across rolling terrain seldom found on Florida courses. The back nine holes are equally challenging but offer a different look that showcases everything that makes Florida golf great - from scenic wetlands to moss-draped oaks.

Timacuan's front nine features sprawling bunkers, generous landing areas, oversized, undulating greens, and framing mounds which combine to create a challenging and memorable nine holes.

The most notable of those is the 421-yard par 4 second. Golf Life Orlando Magazine included Timacuan's second hole among "The Best 18 Holes In Orlando." And an Orlando Business Journal article once named No. 2 the second most difficult hole in Central Florida.

Players must drive over one lake to what is in essence an island fairway, and then carry a second body of water to reach a putting surface that slopes from back to front. The shot can be anywhere 220 and 115 yards, depending upon how bold the player is off the tee. There is a bailout area to the right, but Garl suggests that players should take an extra club and aim for the green, as there is plenty of room to miss it long. Says Garl: "No. 2 has it all - beauty, challenge and options. And there is no letup in the hole until the ball hits the bottom of the cup."

The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel, with beautiful moss-draped oak trees and tall pines providing the framing. And it features the Timacuan "Oh Wow Corner." One large body of water comes into play on 15, 16 and 17, demanding accuracy off each tee. The 15th is a reachable par 5, at under 500 yards. But stray left or right and you're reaching into your bag for a new ball. No. 16, playing 165 yards from the regular tees, requires an all-carry tee shot to a bunkerless green that is guarded by mounds. No. 17 is a great risk/reward hole, where longer hitters can bite off a big chunk of the lake, leaving a pitch shot to a sloping green.

Nearly every green complex at Timacuan has closely-mown fringe areas, allowing for a variety of shot selections when players miss the green. And speaking of the greens, they are consistently among the best conditioned putting surfaces in Central Florida.

"Timacuan is a semi-private golf club, but we will attempt to provide a private-club type experience," said the new owners. "Our plans are to increase the value of the membership, and also to make sure our visiting golfers feel as though Timacuan is their home away from home. We plan to provide a golf experience that is as unique as the course design."

Timacuan is home to the Mike Bender Golf Academy. Bender is ranked among the 10 top instructors in the world, and was named 2009 PGA teacher of the year. His list of students includes Masters Champion Zach Johnson, two-time U.S. Open Lee Janzen, recent PGA Tour winner Jonathan Byrd, Nationwide Tour winner Skip Kendall, and LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year Seon Hwa Lee.

Timacuan offers value-filled membership packages as well as being open to non-members. For more information, or to make a tee time, call 407-321-0010. The club's web site is www.golftimacuan.com.

Snake Eyes Tour Performance II Golf Balls Review

November 15, 2010

SNAKE EYES Tour Performance II

SNAKE EYES Tour Performance II

Grade: A
Teacher’s Comments: Amazing price/performance ratio

I stopped by GolfSmith early last week to browse the end-of-season sale items and ran across a display of GolfSmith’s Snake Eyes Tour Performance II balls. I didn’t know anything about them and the information on the box frankly wasn’t really helpful; just the usual marketing speak about a three piece ball, energy transfer, distance and spin. What got me, though, was the price: just $10 a dozen for a three piece ball. I couldn’t pass up a deal like that.

I’ve now played 36 holes with the Snake Eyes Tour Performance balls, and find I really like them. My two rounds playing them (two combined nines over two days, and a single 18) were 79 and 84. I don’t know how much I can attribute to the ball, since a lot seems to me coming together for me right now—my swing has felt really good, I’m putting like a golfing god and the conditions are hard and fast. But on the other hand, it’s cooler and breezy and balls just don’t fly as far under those conditions. So I’m going to at least give the Snake Eyes at least an assist.

The first thing I noticed is that the Snake Eyes are long. Judging from where my tee shots are landing (on a very familiar course), I find that they’re longer than any ball I’ve recently played—perhaps even longer than my beloved Callaway HX Hot. Ball flight off the tee bores nicely, and I’m not seeing the ballooning shots to which I’m prone. I’m also hitting lots of fairways and greens, so there’s not a lot of sidespin.

Around the green, they’re more than adequate for my game. I’ve never been able to get a ball to check up and spin back, so that not a standard to which I’ll hold them. They do, however, stop quickly on the green with shots off mid and short irons. I like the way they putt, too.

Feel is a bit hard to discern because of the cooler weather. They’re surely not as hard as a Pinnacle or standard Top Flite. Neither are they as soft as one of the “soft feel” balls. They’re fine in the cold, and I think they’ll be even better in warmer weather.

Durability hasn’t been an issue. I’ve actually got the balls from the first sleeve I opened and they are not inordinately scruffed.

In short, I really like them. And here’s the bottom line. I’m going back to Golfsmith to buy a hundred dollars worth of these balls. Seriously.

"Tom Watson applies the same sense of determination and purpose in his new DVD instructional set," says Jastrow, "as he has to his competitive golf game. It's fifty years of experience from one of the game's masters."

Watson ranks 6th on the list of total major championship victories with more wins than Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson. Watson is one of only fourteen players to have won at least three of the four golfing major titles

Encyclopedic in its skill and strategy coverage, 'Lessons of a Lifetime' is a defining instructional medium and will be a must for beginning golfers and weekend warriors as well as experienced golfers wanting to step up their game. Watson shares the knowledge of the golf swing and game that he learned as a student, competitor and peer of golf legends Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino and others. Watson says, "It's very important that golfers-whether they are beginners or have played for 50 years-learn and understand the fundamentals. These are the building blocks every golfer needs to have in order to play up to their potential but, more importantly, to have fun."

From playing in the wind, to hooking and slicing, antidotes to fearless putting, Watson breaks them down in an easy-to-understand manner. Golfers can begin applying these lessons of a lifetime the next time they stand on the first tee with their friends. Watson teaches his lessons of his lifetime as if golfers are there with him.

"I was fortunate to have received excellent instruction early in my life," says Watson, a Kansas City, Missouri, native who shows no signs of slowing down. "When I was 6 years old, my father, Ray Watson, cut down a hickory-shafted 5-iron, then proceeded to teach me the grip, and how to hook and slice the ball-all the basic fundamentals of the game. It's all this knowledge I've accumulated that I'd like to share with golfers in 'Lessons of a Lifetime.' "

Consistency, contact, alignment, firmness of grip, pivot points, release, rhythm and legendary coach, Harvey Penick's "dead-aim" philosophy are all covered in the two comprehensive DVDs. Watson's instruction comes across in an easy-to-understand manner making it seem your standing right beside him on the tee or green.

The DVD program is prepared in the NTSC format and is region free to play on Japanese equipment.

KemperSports Properties Recognized By Golfweek's Best New List

Highly-anticipated Old Macdonald takes home No. 1 spot NORTHBROOK, Ill., Nov. 18, 2010 - KemperSports announced today that three of its properties have been honored by Golfweek in its list of the best new golf courses to be opened in 2009-2010. The list, which was published in the Oct. 29 issue of the magazine, utilized Golfweek's panel of raters to determine the top-40 new golf courses that includes public, private and resort golf courses.

Old Macdonald, the much-anticipated fourth course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, took home the no. 1 spot, while Cape Fear National in Wilmington, NC. and The Golf Club at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich., came in at Nos. 22 (No. 8 in 2010) and 32 (No. 14 in 2010), respectively.

"We are fortunate to be involved with some great clients, architects and partners," said KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner. "Each of these projects is very special and deserving of being on the Golfweek list."

Old Macdonald, designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina, opened to golfers on June 10, 2010, marking the 100-year anniversary of the founding of The National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y. The course includes design attributes of the course's namesake and the grandfather of golf course architecture in America, Charles Blair Macdonald.

Cape Fear National is an 18-hole, Tim Cate-designed course that opened in April 2010. The course layout features a rippling landscape mixed with cypress, pine, maple, oak and magnolia trees. Multiple holes are intertwined throughout with preserved wetlands and scenic lakes to make for a natural and enjoyable walk through the course.

Opened in August 2010, The Golf Club at Harbor Shores held its grand opening celebration by hosting the Champions for Change golf challenge featuring a charity skins match between course designer Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Johnny Miller. The master-planned community is in close proximity to Lake Michigan and sits along the beautiful St. Joseph and Paw Paw Rivers. The Golf Club at Harbor Shores will host the 2012 and 2014 Senior PGA Championships.

PGA Tour Historical Money List Winners, with Inflation Adjusted Earnings

November 18, 2010

When I read that Matt Kuchar had topped the PGA Tour 2010 money list with $4,910,477 in earnings, I began to wonder how that feat stacks up historically. On the surface, it doesn’t look like much compared to the $10,905,166 Vijay Singh racked up in 2004, or the $10,867,052 Tiger scored in 2007. But it certainly looks miles away from the $6,767 that Paul Runyan earned in 1934—the first year records were kept.

Of course, the problem with such historical comparisons is that over time, inflation has eroded the value of the dollar. To get a true comparison, player earnings need to be figured in current dollars. To do that, I recalcuated the earnings based on published inflation rates.

In current dollars, it turns out that Paul Runyan’s $6,767 in 1934 would be worth $110,911.13—not close to Matt Kuchar’s $4 million, but surely a pretty good living. Tops among the early players, Byron Nelson’s 1945 campaign netted him an inflation-adjusted $746,727.43. No wonder he was able to buy a ranch on his winnings. Jack Nicklaus in 1967 was the first to top $1 million in inflation adjusted dollars.

Kuchar’s $4 million thus is a pretty paltry sum. Sing’s $10 million in 2004 would be worth $12 million today. Kuchar earned a third of that. It is, however, roughly twice what Nick Price earned in 1994—the year before the so-called “Tiger Effect” took hold.

The entire chart is below:

In this alternate scoring game, the player with the lowest score on each hole wins a number of points equal to that hole’s yardage. If there’s a tie, the players split the yards. At the end of the round, the player with the most points wins.

Caddy For A Cure Expands Its Charitable Giving

Coral Springs, FL (November 16, 2010) - Caddy For A Cure, Inc., the non-profit program that offers golf fans a chance to be inside the ropes for a day to caddy for the world's best golfers during official tournament weeks, is honored to announce a recent addition to its charitable giving. Beginning in 2011, Caddy For A Cure will be making donations to Birdies for the Brave (www.birdiesforthebrave.com), an initiative proudly supported by the PGA TOUR that raises funds and awareness for military homefront charities that provide programs and services to meet the specialized needs of service members and their families.

The Caddy For A Cure program offers its caddy opportunities from its website www.caddyforacure.com, where interested parties bid on the opportunity to caddy for a specific player and tournament. The auction winner spends the day with the player and their TOUR caddy on the driving range, putting green and golf course, watching each shot first-hand and experiencing the excitement of being part of a professional golf event. Caddy participation is fully tax deductible as allowed by law and 100% of auction proceeds are directed to charities, including the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, Birdies for the Brave, and charities selected by each tournament, each participating player and each Tour.

Birdies for the Brave was created in 2005 by Phil and Amy Mickelson to support soldiers wounded in combat. Since then, the PGA TOUR has helped expand the program to include military appreciation activities during TOUR tournaments, including Birdies for the Brave military hospitality suites, military appreciation celebrations, and the opportunity for military members and their dependents to enjoy the tournament free of charge. Additionally, rehabilitative programs including the unique Adopt-A-Wounded Warrior program and fundraising efforts are conducted at the TOUR's TPC Network of clubs - an effort that has raised more than $5.2 million for military homefront charities that are supported by TOUR players.

"It continues to amaze and humble me that our program we dreamed about 10 years ago as a way to help fight the horrible disease of Fanconi anemia and to support our U.S. military is alive and thriving," said Russ Holden, Caddy For A Cure founder and veteran PGA TOUR caddy. "Through this great game of golf, we have been able to partner with many outstanding military organizations including the Navy Blue Angels Foundation, and support warriors on various levels. Contributing to Birdies for the Brave as one of our core charities is a perfect fit for us in that it touches multiple needs of our U.S. military men and women. We look forward to offering 'caddy' days inside the ropes for members of our military who have so bravely served our country."

Stephen Kupcha, a former Navy SEAL who spearheads the TOUR's community and military outreach initiatives, added, "It is so great to be able to tie together the Caddy For A Cure component and the fundraising efforts already supported by PGA TOUR players. Most of the TOUR players who support Birdies for the Brave have participated in the Caddy For A Cure initiative, including Phil Mickelson, Rory Sabbatini, Jerry Kelly, Boo Weekley and Corey Pavin. It's a natural partnership and truly demonstrates that professional golf is more than just a group of incredibly talented players; it's a team of caring individuals driven to touch lives, give back and make a difference."
