Pro Golf May Return To Michigan In 2011

October 11, 2010

According to a report in the Detroit News, professional golf could return to Michigan as early as the fall of 2011, with an event at the Detroit Golf Club. The tournament presumably would be played on the Donald Ross designed North Course. The Detroit Golf Club is located at Seven Mile and Woodward. A member of the DGC’s Board of Directors says that it is doing “due diligence” to bring a tournament back to Michigan. Speculation that the event would be in mid-September is fueled by a hole in the PGA schedule a week before the Tour Championship. The hope is that another event would give way the following season, allowing the Detroit Golf Club’s event to get a better place on the schedule.

There’s absolutely no reason that Michigan should be without a professional golf event. It’s a golf-mad state, with more than 800 public courses. And it has a history of supporting golf events. The Buick Open lasted from 1958 to 2009, when Buick dropped its sponsorship and the Tour gave the event to a West Virginia hotel mogul. Other events ahve included the Senior Player’s Championship (2990 - 2006), the LPGA’s Oldsmobile Classic (1992 - 2004), and the Champions’ Tour’s Farmers Charity Classic (1986 - 2004). The Buick Open and Senior Players’ Championships didn’t die for lack of community support—they were dropped by sponsor heading in a different direction. Buick was headed for bankruptcy, while Ford had decided to put its money into bull riding of all things.

The Detroit area also has been kind to major events. In recent years, there’s been a PGA Championship and Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills, in a Detroit suburb.

I look forward to this.

Man Swept Through Sewer Ends Up On 15th Green

October 13, 2010

Strange story: A worker was swept by 3,000 gallons of sewage more than mile through a 27 inch pipe, only to end up near the fifteenth green of a nearby golf course in the middle of a tournament.

Michigan Golf Course Owner’s Association Endorses Synder

October 6, 2010

In what apparently is its first political endorsement, the Michigan Golf Course Owner’s Association has endorsed Rick Synder for Governor:

Michigan Golf Course Owners: Snyder to Help Tourism Industry
Organization Makes First-Ever Endorsement in Political Campaign

LANSING, MI—(Marketwire - October 4, 2010) -  The Michigan Golf Course Owners Association today made the first-ever campaign endorsement in the organization’s history by publicly backing Rick Snyder for governor, saying he is the best candidate to help create jobs in the tourism industry.

“Our organization doesn’t usually get involved in campaigns, but this election is too important to sit out,” said MGCOA Executive Director Kate M. Moore. “It’s clear Rick sees the value of protecting the environment and using Michigan’s natural resources to our advantage to boost the tourism industry, which will create jobs.”

Tourism is the state’s third-largest industry.

The Michigan Golf Course Owners Association represents golf course owners and operators throughout the state.

At first, I thought it odd that the Golf Course Owners would make a political endorsement, but on reflection, its likely a measure of just how bad things have gotten here in Michigan. There’s a reason you can play a high-end course in Michigan for half the price of three years ago—and even then the prices were very reasonable compared to other places. After eight years of Democratic control of the Governor’s Mansion, people here are looking for a change. Rick Snyder, the Republican Candidate, is a former computer industry exec, and a current venture capitalist, so he has come cred among business owners.

When Synder wins—and its’s when, not if—I hope he finds a way to permanently fund the Pure Michigan tourism advertising campaigns.

Dow May Sponsor Michigan PGA Tour Event

October 13, 2010

With news of the probable return of the PGA Tour to Michigan, the identity of the corporate sponsor now becomes a question. One mid-Michigan television station claims it’ll be Dow, the Midland, Michigan - based chemical giant.

Speculation about Dow Chemical and a PGA Tour event began earlier this summer when Golfweek Magazine’s Web site mentioned the Midland-based company showed interest in sponsoring a tournament next year.

When we asked a Dow Chemical spokesperson if the company was a possible sponsor of a PGA Tour event at the Detroit Golf Club next year, the answer was the company does not comment on rumor or speculation.

Dow Chemical became the official Chemistry Company of the PGA Tour in 2008 and now sponsors five PGA Tour players, including Corey Pavin. A spokesperson for the PGA Tour would not comment on whether there have been talks on Dow Chemical sponsoring a tournament, but he does confirm the tour for next year is 90 percent set with a final tour schedule to be released sometime in November.

Flood says the Detroit Golf Club is working to host that PGA Tour event next fall.n, the identity of the corporate sponsor is a question. One mid-Michigan television station claims it will be Dow, the Midland, Michigan based chemical giant.

Get A Free Movie Ticket

September 19, 2010

I love the movies, but with tickets at local theaters running to $10 each, I don’t go very often. I just can’t afford to take the family when it’s $40 to get in the door, and twice again for the popcorn and drinks. Eighty dollars for two hours entertainment is too rich for my tastes.

Apparently I’m not the only one with this, for there’s a new site called Free Movie Ticket that offers subscriptions for four movie tickets at $19.99 a month. They’ll also give you a free ticket for trying them out. In my area, that’s a 50% savings.

The site promises that when up and running, the tickets will be good at 14,000 theaters nationwide. I’ll have to see if my local cineplex is included.

Now if only someone would come up with half-price popcorn ...

Inside the US Ryder Cup Team

October 12, 2010

Michael Bamberger at Golf.Com has a very interesting article on how the US Ryder Cup team gelled over the competition.  The inside scoop comes from Ted Bishop, secretary of the PGA.

“This team had no cliques,” Bishop said. “The young guys and the veterans were together. Phil and Tiger were doubles partners in Ping-Pong, having a great time, taking on all challengers. According to some of the younger players, Phil was saying that he feels his career is winding down and he wanted them to know how much the Ryder Cup meant, pass it down to them, and that going forward he wanted to help them understand how to grow the game.”

Ok. So we might expect that sort of thing from Phil. But Tiger also was working overtime to be a team player:

“Tiger was amazing,” Bishop said. “He knew that Jeff Overton had never met him, and Overton had been telling people that the thing he was most excited about was the chance to finally meet Tiger. Jeff’s sitting in a chair, talking to some people. Tiger gets in a chair right next to him, taps Jeff on the shoulder. Jeff turns around, sees who it is and yells, ‘It’s Tiger Woods!’”

On the overnight charter to Wales, Woods did soduko puzzles. Fowler, Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson were jumping around like kids on a field trip. “Tiger rips out a couple of pages from his book, and like a parent calming down children, hands them the puzzles and says, ‘Here, why don’t you try to do these?’ And they did them and came back and said, ‘O.K., we can handle something harder now.’ Tiger was laughing.”

That doesn’t sound to me like the Tiger as typically portrayed by the media.

Read the rest of the article. It’s quite interesting.

MacGregor Tourney Ball 16 Pack

October 13, 2010

MACGREGOR Tourney 16-Pack

MACGREGOR Tourney 16-Pack

Fall weather brings leaves on the fairway, and exponentially increases the chances of losing a ball. My solution is to turn to cheaper balls—ones that I won’t worry too much about losing. In that past, that’s meant the Pinnacle Gold Distance 15-Pack, which I’ve found to be more than acceptable.

But Golfsmith now is running a deal where you can get two of their MacGregory Tourney 16-packs for just $20. That’s 32 balls for a Jackson. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

The MacGregor Tourney is billed as a low compression, two piece ball. Sounds about right.
