GolfTripGenius.com Creates iPad App

Golfers can now use the popular mobile device to track scores and update leaderboard while on a golf trip. WAYNE, PA (Nov. 16, 2010) - GolfTripGenius.com announced that key features and functionality of its web-based service aimed at traveling golfers are now available as a new app on the Apple iPad.

Introduced earlier this year, GolfTripGenius.com helps golfers plan trips, set up pairings and manage tournaments, scoring and expenses.

The new iPad app allows GolfTripGenius.com customers to add to the fun and expand their mobility options while on a golf trip by using their iPad for scorecard entry and leaderboard display.

After their round, golfers can enter their scores on one of nearly 1,000 golf course scorecards accessible through the iPad app. (More courses are being added daily.) The players' trip leaderboard is then automatically updated and shown on the iPad's 9.7" LED-backlit display.

A video of the new iPad app shows how easy it is to use.

Mike Vallone said the iPad app decreased his work and added to the fun of a recent eight-player trip that he led to Las Vegas.

"I brought my iPad to the course, and as players came off 18, I quickly entered their scores," said Vallone, an experienced golf trip captain from Cheshire, Conn. "On the shuttle back to the hotel, I announced the tournament and skins results. The guys were really impressed because it usually takes a while for someone to figure everything up. It was sure a lot easier for me."

Mike Zisman, CEO of GolfTripGenius.com, said the introduction of the iPad app is consistent with consumers' desire for ease of use, instant gratification and greater productivity through the use of their mobile devices.

"We're focused on two fundamental goals: making golf trips more fun and reducing work for the trip captain," said Zisman. "The new iPad app helps us deliver on those goals in a very cool way."

The iPad, introduced by Apple in April, weighs only 1.6 pounds and fits easily into a small duffel bag or golf bag.

KBS Tour Steel Shafts Win Three Tour Events

Boulder, Colorado - KBS Tour steel shafts were on fire last weekend at three top-seeded tour events around the globe.

Femco Steel Technology (FST), the company that developed and manufactures the KBS Tour Steel shafts, announced that its premium shafts were played by:

The Champion of the Children's Miracle Network Classic in Orlando.

Overseas at the Singapore Open, the shafts were played by the Champion as well as the Runner-up.

And finally, on Monday at the AT&T Skills Challenge, KBS Tour shafts were part of the winning Duo.

Since their introduction to the professional tours worldwide in 2008, KBS Tour steel shafts continue to capture the attention of a growing number of players. More than 35 top-tier tour players have already switched to the new shafts. KBS Tour steel shafts have been used in full iron sets to win 33 professional tour titles worldwide and many top 10 finishes.

Professional golf's top players rarely change iron shafts unless there are tangible performance benefits. The tour successes for the players who have switched to KBS Tour iron shafts speak volumes about KBS performance.

"We stepped outside normal design parameters to develop the KBS Tour shaft," says FST's shaft designer, Kim Braly. "We were able to formulate a highly unique distribution of stiffness along the shaft's length. The result is a smoother transfer of energy, a penetrating ball flight, and a softer 'feel' at the tip."

Expect to see more news about KBS shafts from all of the professional golf tours worldwide.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., FEMCO Steel Technology (FST) is a leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of high-quality steel golf shafts, including the premium KBS Series of shafts. Since 1949, FEMCO has remained committed to creating and providing high-quality and cost-effective steel products and services worldwide. Manitou Passage Among Golfweek's Best New Courses

Glen Arbor, MI - Golfweek Magazine has chosen Manitou Passage Golf Club, located near the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in the Leelanau Peninsula, as one of its "Best New Courses" in 2010. The recognition of the 40 top new courses in the country appears in the October issue of the magazine.

Golfweek's course evaluators grade courses all over the country on a 10-point scale to identify the country's finest golf courses. Raters take into account factors such as routing of the course, feature shaping, greens, variety and memorable holes, conditioning, maintenance, and landscape management.

This accolade makes Manitou Passage Golf Club one of the top destination courses in northern Michigan. The course joins Harbor Shores Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus, as one of the two Michigan courses to make the Golfweek's best new list.

Manitou Passage Golf Club is a signature Arnold Palmer design that has gone through a major renovation and restoration project to complete and update the design that was originally envisioned by Palmer.

When a group of golf devotees purchased the course over a year ago, they did so with the goal of creating a new destination course featuring exceptional playing conditions and unmatched service. That group, lead by Bob Kuras, president of The Homestead, brought the Arnold Palmer Design Company, Peridian International, and the Wadsworth Golf Construction Company in to assist with the renovation efforts.

The Palmer and Peridian work included scores of minor and major changes. Under the direction of Kuras and his son James, Wadsworth completed the majority of the changes recommended by Palmer. Renovations included the repositioning, adding and squaring off of tee-boxes, widening of fairways in key landing areas, renovating bunkers, lengthening some holes, restoring areas with native grasses and clearing of trees and brush to open vistas to the area's natural beauty.

"We're honored to have been chosen by Golfweek Magazine and pleased to be in the company of other great courses," said Kuras.

One of the most dramatic (and, most talked about) changes was on hole No. 8, now one of the region's prettiest and most challenging par 5's. The tee boxes were re-positioned and trees removed, which opened up one of the signature views in all of northern Michigan, including Lake Michigan, the Manitou Passage, sand dunes and lighthouse.

With its crystal clear inland waters, sparkling Lake Michigan beaches, and miles of rolling sand dunes in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Leelanau was the perfect setting for Manitou Passage Golf Club as it was for The Homestead, America's Freshwater Resort. Guests can now enjoy this world-class Arnold Palmer signature design and golf packages at a resort of comparable quality.

Murphy Earns To Aloha Section PGA Honors

Kaua'i courses earn top rankings from Golfweek magazine's "America's Best" raters; the St. Regis Princeville Resort celebrates anniversary with special offer (KAUA'I, Hawaii) - The Princeville Prince Course in Hanalei announces today that Director of Golf Steve Murphy has received two elite honors from the Aloha Section of the PGA - 2010 Professional of the Year and Merchandiser of the Year (Resorts).

The PGA Professional of the Year Award recognizes professionals based on their entire record with an emphasis on his/her achievements during the last five years. Some of the criteria include career enhancement qualities, leadership abilities, strengths as a player, teacher, merchandiser and business person as well as contributions to the facility's success and the game of golf at the section level. Winners of the Merchandiser of the Year Award are acknowledged for their display techniques, inventory mix, merchandising philosophy and the success of their operation.

"Steve's leadership and expertise, along with his staff's commitment to excellence are why the Prince Course shines, and what golf visitors to Kaua'i can expect at our island courses," says Sue Kanoho, Executive Director of the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau.

Murphy, who started at Prince Course in 2004 as Head Professional, serves on the Board of Directors of both the Aloha PGA Section and the Kaua'i Junior Golf Association. He was the driving force behind the inaugural PGA / Amateur event on Kaua'i this past summer, The Prince Invitational, which drew a field of many top professionals and leading amateur golfers from the state. He is also a regular volunteer and supporter to the "Get Ready Golf" program, "Play Golf America" and the various "Bring Your Family to the Course" promotions.

In 2009, Murphy was awarded the Horton Smith Trophy, which is presented annually to the golf pro who contributes to building the PGA image via leadership, networking and promotion of the game from within the local community.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Princeville's 18-hole Prince Course is ranked by Golf Digest as Hawaii's No. 1 course and is the only one in the State of Hawaii to be included on Golf Digest's 2009/2010 list of "America's 100 Greatest Courses."

Murphy will be recognized on Dec. 5 with his fellow award winners at the 2010 Aloha Section PGA Annual Meeting at Pearl Country Club.

Kaua'i Honored in Golfweek's "Best Resort Courses" Issue
Poipu Bay Golf Course, Kaua'i Lagoons Golf Club and the Princeville Prince Course were all named on Golfweek magazine's "America's Best Resort Courses" national rankings in the Nov. 2 issue.

Kaua'i Lagoons - the Jack Nicklaus-design that will unveil a vast renovation project in May - moved up 12 spots on the prestigious list to No. 60 overall. The Prince Course landed at No. 22 overall and was second in golf-rich Hawaii while Poipu Bay came in at No. 72.

Poipu Bay - a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design - is the former home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and will re-open on Dec. 16 following a nine-month restoration project that saw it install Seashore Paspalum greens, a warm-season turf that requires less water and chemicals to maintain excellent conditions.

The St. Regis Princeville Resort Celebrates Anniversary with a Quintessential Experience

In celebration of the St. Regis Princeville Resort's one-year anniversary, the resort has introduced The Quintessential Anniversary Experience, which offers a truly romantic way to celebrate one's own anniversary, while enjoying the resort's luxurious comforts and exclusive location.

Guests will have around the clock access to the legendary St. Regis Butler Service and enjoy a private ocean-side dinner for two, as well as a romantic couple's massage at the Halele'a Spa.

The Quintessential Anniversary Experience is available for $5,500 through March 31, 2011. In addition to the services and amenities included in the offer, Starwood Preferred Guests will earn double rewards points that can be allocated to a future getaway at any Starwood destination.

Titleist Enjoys Big Weekend

Titleist Brand Ambassador Adam Scott trusts Pro V1 golf ball and full bag of Titleist clubs in Barclays Singapore Open victory. Fairhaven, MA (November 15, 2010) - Proving he has the game to win anywhere in the world, Titleist Brand Ambassador Adam Scott shot four consecutive rounds in the 60s to capture the weather-delayed Barclays Singapore Open by three shots. Scott relied on the Pro V1 golf ball and a complete bag of Titleist equipment tee-to-green as he outlasted a strong international field en route to his seventh European Tour title and the 18th professional win of his career. On the PGA TOUR, Pro V1 loyalist Robert Garrigus captured the season-ending Children's Miracle Network Classic, firing a final round 8-under 64 in Orlando to seal his first TOUR victory. Additional wins on the LPGA and South African Tours advances the 2010 Titleist victory count across the worldwide professional tours to 139, more than six times the nearest competitor with 23.

TITLEIST HIGHLIGHTS FOR WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 14, 2010

EUROPEAN TOUR: After opening with a pair of 6-under 65s, Scott closed with a 3-under 68 for a winning score of 17-under 267. He had a three-shot lead on the field when the leaders returned to play 10 holes on Monday after play was suspended a day earlier due to severe weather.

- The win is the second of the year for Scott (he also captured the PGA TOUR's Valero Texas Open in May) and marks the third time Scott has won the Barclays Singapore Open (2005, 2006).

- Scott continues the early success of the new 910 driver, relying upon the 910D3 model in his victory. He becomes the 12th player to win with a 910 driver since its Tour introduction in July. The driver begins shipping to golf shops worldwide this week. Scott is also the first player to win playing the new 910Fd prototype 3-wood.

- What's in Adam's Bag?: Pro V1, 910D3 driver (10.5, A2 setting), 910Fd 3-wood (15), 909H hybrid (21), MB irons (3-9), Vokey Design Spin Milled pitching (48), sand (54) and lob (60) wedges, Scotty Cameron Newport putter.

- Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the Barclays Singapore Open with 128 players, more than four times the nearest competitor with 28.

PGA TOUR: Garrigus (Pro V1) finished the Children's Miracle Network Classic at 21-under 267, three shots clear of runner-up Roland Thatcher (Pro V1x). Garrigus began the week 122nd in earnings and vaulted to No. 51 with the win. Thatcher jumped from 179th to 122nd to also keep his playing privileges for 2010.

- Thatcher joined Mark Wilson (Pro V1x) and Titleist Brand Ambassador Michael Connell (Pro V1, 910D3 driver, CB and MB irons, Vokey Design TVD sand wedge, Vokey Design lob wedge, Scotty Cameron GSS putter) as the only players to advance into the top 125 after starting the week outside of it.

- Titleist Brand Ambassadors Rickie Fowler (Pro V1x, 909D2 driver, 910F fairway metal, MB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron prototype putter) and Johnson Wagner (Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, 904F fairway metal, AP2 and CB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron prototype putter) joined Spencer Levin (new Pro V1x prototype) in a three-way tie for 3rd, as the top 5 finishers all trusted Titleist golf balls for their success.

- Titleist Brand Ambassador Troy Merritt (Pro V1, 909D2 driver, 909F2 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, AP1 irons, Vokey Design wedges) finished at 8-under 280, and tied for 30th. It was just enough for Merritt to finish the year at No. 125 on the 2010 Money List, the final player inside the cut line to retain his card for next year.

- Merritt also topped Fowler and Aaron Baddeley (Pro V1x) in a three-way playoff to win the $1 million Kodak Challenge. The Challenge designates a hole at 30 PGA TOUR tournaments and keeps score throughout the year. The three Kodak finalists finished at 17-under, requiring a playoff at No. 17 on Disney World's Magnolia Course at the conclusion of the tournament. Merritt birdied the hole to claim the prize.

- Of the 11 players who finished among the Top 10 and ties, nine trusted a Titleist golf ball for their success.

- Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball choice at the event with 89 players, more than six times the nearest competitor with 14.

LPGA TOUR:

- In-Kyung Kim (Pro V1) captured the Lorena Ochoa Invitational for her third career LPGA Tour title, closing with an 8-under 64 for a three-stroke victory. Kim finished at 19-under 269 and upon winning, announced that she would be donating her entire $220,000 winner's check to charity.

- Kim, who tied the tournament record of 64 (set in the first round by Pro V1 loyalist Cristie Kerr) posted previous victories at the 2009 LPGA State Farm Classic and 2008 Longs Drugs Challenge.

- Karine Icher (Pro V1), who holed a wedge shot on the par-5 18th hole for eagle, finished 3rd, followed by Cristie Kerr who tied for 4th.

- Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the limited-field event with 24 players, more than all other golf balls combined.

- Of the 12 players who finished among the top 10 and ties, eight trusted a Titleist golf ball for their success.

SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR:

- It was an all-Titleist Pro V1x playoff at the Sunshine Tour's BMG Classic, where Brandon Pieters made par on the first playoff hole to top Ben Mannix. Pieters and Mannix each finished regulation at 11-under 205.

- Rookie Steven Ferreira finished one shot behind the leaders, while Titleist Brand Ambassador Jean Hugo (Pro V1x, 910 driver, 910F 3-wood, 910H hybrid, MB irons, Vokey Design wedges) finished solo 4th, giving Titleist Pro V1x players a 1-2-3-4 sweep.

- Titleist was the top golf ball choice at the event with 105 players, more than all other competitors combined.

KOREAN TOUR:

- It was a Titleist 1-2-3 finish at the Hana Championship where Wi Joong Kim (Pro V1) topped Titleist Brand Ambassador Joon Eob Sohn (Pro V1x, 910D3 driver, 910F fairway metals, 910H hybrid, MB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron Newport putter) with a birdie on the third playoff hole.

- It was the second career win for Kim, who first won three years ago.

- Another Titleist Brand Ambassador J.K. Mo (Pro V1, 910D3 driver, 910F fairway metals, AP2 irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron Newport putter) finished solo 3rd, one shot out of the playoff.

- Of the 10 players who finished among the Top 10, seven trusted a Titleist golf ball for their success.

- Titleist was the most played golf ball at the limited-field, 40-player event with 28 players (70%), more than five times the nearest competitor (5). Titleist was also the top choice in drivers with 14.

World Number One Update

November 14, 2010

Updated:

It’s not exactly a Major, but the Australian Masters is interesting this year for what it tells us about the state of Tiger’s game. He won the event last year, but after three rounds in 2010, he’s ten strokes behind. Ahead of him are some fine players, such as Geoff Ogilvy, Camilo Villegas and Stuart Appleby, so its not likely he’s going to stage a Sunday Charge.

Meanwhile, at the Barclays Singapore Open, Phil Mickelson is in 46th place, 12 strokes behind the leader Adam Scott.

There’s not going to be any movement at the top of the World Golf Rankings this weekend.

*******************

As it turns out, Tiger had a fine fourth round, shooting a six under 65. He finished fourth, three behind the winner, Stuart Appleby. As has happened all year, signs of the old Tiger flashed briefly before our eyes. In his last four holes, he had an eagle two at the par-four 15th, a birdie on the par-five 17th and an eagle three on the par-five 18th.

Phil, in the meantime, was docked two strokes for failing to return to the course ontime following a weather delay. He finished in a T31, -4 overall and 14 behind winner Adam Scott.

Nippon Shaft Introduces Pro Tour-Focused Shafts

New N.S. Pro Modus3Tour 120 Shaft Is Engineered for Maximum Distance, Accuracy, and Trajectory Control SCHAUMBURG, Illinois (November 16, 2010) - Nippon Shaft today introduced its first steel shaft designed specifically to enhance the unrivaled performance of PGA tour pros and low handicap golfers.

The new N.S. Pro MODUS3 Tour 120 is the first new shaft to come to market since Nippon Shaft began researching the needs of top PGA touring pros over the last 16 months, according to Hiroyuki Fukuda, head of sales and marketing for Nippon Shaft. Company representatives traveled regularly with the PGA TOUR starting in July 2009, talking with players, allowing them to sample prototypes, and refining the shafts to fit their unique requirements.

"We are excited to introduce the N.S. Pro MODUS3 Tour 120, the first in a series of steel shafts designed specifically for the needs of PGA touring pros and low handicap golfers," Fukuda said. "For the last 16 months, Nippon Shaft representatives have traveled week-to-week with the PGA TOUR. During that time many of the world's elite players have provided us with valuable feedback and unique insight into their specific equipment needs. The N.S. Pro MODUS3 Tour 120 is the initial product to result from this exhaustive research and development process."

The shafts will be available to the public in mid-December through Nippon Shaft's dedicated clubfitter network Shaftology and through the custom club departments of top club manufacturers, such as Nike Golf.

A number of PGA touring pros - including former Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup team members - have been playing prototype versions of the MODUS3 shafts in PGA tournaments this year. The Tour 120 model weighs between 114 and 126 grams and comes in S, X, and Tour X flex options. Other models still in the testing phase weigh as little as 106 grams and as many as 139 grams - but all meet the requirements of top players.

The N.S. Pro MODUS3 series shafts are popular with touring pros because they offer optimal performance in the three key are:

Desired trajectory, which comes as a result of the unique shaft structure;

2. Accurate distances, thanks to the shaft's unique raw steel material and accompanying heat treatment;

3. Tight dispersion, which comes from the exacting tolerances of the highest quality level.

Nippon Shaft made its reputation in the late 1990s by developing the first high quality lightweight steel shaft. The revolutionary N.S. Pro 950GH became the industry's first sub-100 gram steel shaft, combining the stability and consistency of heavier shafts with extremely light weight. Soon, Nippon Shaft grew to be the No. 1-selling shaft in Asia, controlling 80 percent of the market, and No. 2 in North America. Along the way, Nippon Shaft recorded more than 100 pro tour victories worldwide and became the dominant shaft on the LPGA Tour.

Nippon Shaft manufactures all of its steel and graphite shafts in a state-of-the-art factory at its headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. The company's integrated production lines are strictly monitored and controlled with thorough checks conducted responsibly through the entire production process, Fukuda said. As a result, Nippon Shaft is able to control high product quality - from material selection to final testing.

"Nippon Shaft is committed to manufacturing the world's best shafts for the world's most elite players, as well as for avid amateurs and casual golfers," Fukuda said. "We are pleased and excited that the professionals who have been using our products have been performing so well."

Nippon Shaft is a privately held subsidiary of NHK Spring Co. LTD, a Japanese automobile parts manufacturer. Nippon Shaft's North American headquarters is in Schaumburg, Illinois.

NCGA Obtaining Permits For Poppy Hills Renovations

PEBBLE BEACH, CA - The Northern California Golf Association has started the process to obtain permits for a complete golf course and clubhouse renovation at its home facility, Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach, California.

At a recent meeting, the NCGA Board of Directors approved the multi-year, multi-step process to:

* Redesign and lessen doglegs to help the course unfold more naturally
* Replace and redesign all putting greens
* Sandcap fairways to greatly improve drainage
* Replace irrigation system to better manage water usage
* Renovate the clubhouse including restaurant and restrooms

A driving force behind the renovation of the NCGA members' course is the conservation of water. The 24-year-old course already has an excellent environmental track record through its 100% utilization of reclaimed water for irrigation, but the overhaul further addresses water consumption by reducing irrigated areas of turf.

It is anticipated that it will take 12-24 months to complete permitting for the work. The project will proceed with the Robert Trent Jones Jr. Group once the permit is obtained and given a favorable economic environment.

"We are excited about the prospect of improving Poppy Hills," says NCGA/Poppy Holding CEO Lyn Nelson. "We take pride in our golf course and feel this is a wonderful opportunity to enhance the layout and playing conditions. Providing an unmatched golf experience and value for NCGA members will always be a top priority for the Association and this project seeks to enhance that experience and make our members' course one of the finest in the nation."

Open to the general public, Poppy Hills offers green fees as low as $55 for NCGA members vs. the $200 public rate. The course is also part of the NCGA Foundation's Youth on Course program, where deserving youth can play for as low as $2.

About the Northern California Golf Association
Founded in 1901, the NCGA is the largest regional golf association in the country, with more than 160,000 individuals who belong to more than 1,250 members clubs throughout Northern California and into Nevada.

Among other services, the NCGA provides official handicap indexes, owns and operates two golf courses, Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge, conducts more than 50 championships annually, publishes NCGA Golf magazine and operates a Foundation to support deserving youth.

About Poppy Hills
Poppy Hills is a challenging course that weaves through the Del Monte Forest. The venue plays host to many prominent tournaments including the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991-2009.

The Robert Trent Jones Jr. design opened in 1986 and is the home course for the NCGA. It was the first course in the United States to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association. The par-72 layout measures 6,857 yards from the black tees with a rating of 74.3/144.

GolfWorld listed the course as 41st on the ranking of the top 50 public courses in its first "Readers' Choice Awards." A 2007 Zagat Survey ranked Poppy Hills the 12th "Most Popular Course" in the U.S, and the layout was named "National Course of the Year" in 2006 by the National Golf Course Owners Association. The golf shop was named as one of the "Top 100 Golf Shops" multiple times by Golf World Business magazine.

Poppy Hills also includes a picturesque grass driving range, chipping, putting and bunker facilities and a video swing analysis system. The course welcomes public play and it is recommended for visitors to join the NCGA to receive nearly a 75% discount off the $200 public green fee.

Vardon Trophy and Byron Nelson Trophy Past Winners

November 16, 2010

The Harry Vardon Trophy is the PGA of America’s annual award for the lowest scoring average among Tour players. When created in 1937, it was first awarded on the basis of a points system. Starting with the 1947 season, it was awarded for scoring average. Beginning in 1980, it was awarded for scoring average with a 60 round minimum, and in 1988, and adjusted scoring average with a 60 round minimum.

The Byron Nelson is the PGA Tour’s equivalent. It was first awarded in 1980, and currently is given for the lowest adjusted scoring average with a 50 round minimum.

The winners of the two are not always the same, as you can see on the chart below.

Tiger Woods (who else) holds the most Vardon Trophies, with eight; and nine Byron Nelson Awards. Lee Trevino and Billy Casper have five Vardons each. Greg Norman has five Byron Nelsons.

Interestingly, the greatest of them all, Jack Nicklaus, holds neither.

Watson DVD surpasses 25,000 sold

Westwood, Kansas -- Rave reviews are one thing -- consumer acceptance is another. And the golfing public has obviously accepted TOM WATSON: LESSONS OF A LIFETIME, a two-DVD instructional set.

The smartly-packaged set, which includes a 16-page booklet, has surpassed 25,000 sets sold, making it the best selling golf DVD of 2010.

The strong early numbers are not surprising considering the palpable buzz surrounding the project - Watson's first-ever instructional program. Its release came just months after the Hall of Famer nearly won the 2009 British Open at age 60. It was also filmed at the world-famous Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, where Watson is the Golf Professional Emeritus. The Greenbrier is one of Watson's favorite places.

Check out what some of the reviewers in the golf world are saying:

• "Bottom line is that this is a MUST HAVE DVD set for any golfer looking to improve his or her game. You'll not only learn how to play the game, but why certain things have to be done a certain way to get the best results." - Don Fisher, golfgearreview.com

• "This instructional program is the ultimate learning experience, covering all facets of the game - from the grip to full shots, to chipping, putting and the secret of his timeless swing, plus specialty shots, including those required in strong wind conditions." -- London Ontario Golf

• "Watson proceeds to systematically teach the game and he is what makes the lessons work so well." Gary Van Sickle, SI Golf

• "'Lessons of a Lifetime is not just a collection of golf advice. It is Watson's personal counsel. And following it has worked out pretty well for him." - Bill Pennington, New York Times

Watson's LESSONS are a compilation of strategies he learned starting in childhood and continuing throughout his professional career, from the most seemingly minute details about grip, to the fluid swing he can still count on in the clutch. Encyclopedic in its skill coverage, LESSONS OF A LIFETIME is a defining instructional medium and is a must have for beginning golfers and weekend warriors, as well as experienced golfers wanting to step up their game.

The two-DVD set provides nearly three hours of instruction and sells at retail for $49.95. The set is available at select golf and sporting goods retailers, pro shops, and at www.tomwatsondvd.com. The website is offering free shipping during the holiday season to all North American destinations. All other international shipping is available for a flat fee of $11.95.

Consumers can also call 1-800-993-5589 to order TOM WATSON: LESSONS OF A LIFETIME. A portion of the proceeds from all sales will be contributed to the Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS Research.

Fortune Brands May Sell Titleist

November 15, 2010

Hedge funder and “activist shareholder” William Ackman may get his way with plans to split Fortune Brands into three separate entities, perhaps selling off the seminal Titleist name to one of its golfing competitors. Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital Management owns 11 percent of the company.

Fortune Brands always has been a bit of a Frankenstein monster, owning a variety of seemingly disconnected lines such as Titleist, Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Moen Faucets, and Masterlock. Fortune Brands is descended from tobacco giant American Tobacco, which was chartered in 1890. Following a Supreme Court ordered break up in 1911, American Tobacco diversified into a variety of alcohol, office (Acco) and home wares products. It changed its name to American Brands in 1969, and became Fortune Brands in 1997. Brown and Williamson acquired the tobacco division in 1994.

Acushnet (Titleist) began as a rubber processing company in 1910. In 1932, it expanded its line to golf balls. Fortune Brands acquired the company in 1976. Fortune bought Foot-Joy in 1985 and Cobra Golf in 1996.

Ackman is a prototypical corporate raider, who apparently wants to turn over his Fortune Brands stake into quick profits by selling off parts of the company. He’s been involved in several other machinations lately, including trying to acquire five seats on the Target board of directors, and acquiring a significant stake in JC Penny. That last action prompted Penny to begin anti-takeover actions. Tax issues apparently present the biggest obstacle to Ackman’s plans.

As it is now, Ackman apparently hopes that Callaway or Nike will buy the golf brands, and that Bacardi or Diageo will buy the spirits division. I frankly don’t see any good coming from this. The golf business already is an oligopoly, and this will just continue that trend. Nothing is served—other than Ackman’s bank account—by increasing that trend.

Furyk Is Player of the Year

November 16, 2010

Jim Furyk has taken the Tiger Woods Award Player of the Year honors on the strength of his three wins, including the Tour Championship. Furyk also pocketed $10 million as the overall winner of the FedEx Cup, for whatever that’s worth (other than $10 million).

Meanwhile, one of my faves, Matt Kuchar, won the Arnold Palmer Award for leading the money list with $100,855 more than runner up Jim Furyk. Kuchar also had the lowest adjusted scoring average this year, edging Steve Stricker by 5/100 of a point. This qualified him for both the PGA of America’s Vardon Award and the PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Award. Both of these are given to the player with the lowest adjusted scoring; the difference is in he minimum number of rounds. The PGA of America requires sixty, the PGA Tour, fifty. Now there’s a distinction without a difference.

Kuchar and Furyk both receive five year exemptions from having to earn a Tour Card. (Not that either of them would have a problem with doing this anyway).

I think it’s healthy for someone other than Tiger Woods to win these honors. The Tour needs someone other than Tiger to capture the public’s attention. I’m not convinced that Tiger will ever be the same.

Diablo Octane Driver

CALLAWAY Diablo Octane Driver

CALLAWAY Diablo Octane Driver

With its new partnership with Automobili Lamborghini, Callaway is bringing new materials to the golf equipment industry. The first products from this duet are the Diablo Octane Drivers and Fairway Woods.

The material in question is Forged Composite,  which is composed of more than 500,000 intertwined turbostratic fibers per square inch. Callaway says that it’s one-third the density of titanium, but with a greater load carrying capacity per unit mass in bending. This apparently allows Callaway to create a clubhead with greater transfer of power at impact and more accuracy than its all-titanium competitors.

I’d love to give this a try.

The full press release is below:

New Drivers Mark Debut of Forged Composite(TM), the Lightest, Strongest, Most Precise Material Callaway Has Ever Used
CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct 14, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/—

Callaway Golf Company (NYSE: ELY) today announced the November 12 retail availability of the new Diablo Octane and Diablo Octane Tour Drivers, as well as the new Diablo Octane Fairway Woods. Twenty years after revolutionizing the driver market with the original Big Bertha Driver, Callaway’s Diablo Octane Drivers introduce another innovative breakthrough in the form of a new material called Forged Composite(TM) -the lightest, strongest, most precise material the Company has ever used.

The performance characteristics of Forged Composite, a material developed in conjunction with Research and Development partner Automobili Lamborghini, has allowed Callaway engineers to develop an advanced clubhead with a greater transfer of power at impact and more accurate trajectories versus its all-titanium counterparts.

“Applying Forged Composite in tandem with a proprietary isothermal forging process has generated a measurable performance advantage over the metal alloys generally used to manufacture golf clubs,” said Dr. Alan Hocknell, Sr. Vice President, Research and Development, Callaway Golf. “The Diablo Octane Drivers are configured to deliver unmatched power and precision through superior design, construction and advanced materials.”

Employing Forged Composite in the crown of the Diablo Octane Driver has allowed Callaway engineers to precisely set the clubhead’s Center of Gravity (CG) and Moment of Inertia (MOI) in order to promote accurate trajectories. This lighter, more efficient clubhead is then paired with a longer shaft to increase head speed and power at impact for longer distances. Additionally, Diablo Octane Drivers include Callaway’s proprietary Hyperbolic Face Technology(TM), which utilizes a chemical milling process to provide a larger sweet spot and improved impact efficiency. Overall, Callaway’s Diablo Octane powers drives beyond those of its all-titanium predecessor by an average distance of eight yards.

Diablo Octane Tour models feature a slightly smaller head size than standard models, a full hosel, and the more open look at address preferred by skilled players. Diablo Octane Drivers come with a Project X(TM) Graphite Shaft that is 46 inches in the standard model and 45.5 inches in the Tour model. The new product introduction retail price for the Diablo Octane and Diablo Octane Tour Drivers is $299.

Building on Callaway’s heritage of innovation, the Diablo Octane and Diablo Octane Tour Fairway Woods are engineered to maximize power. The standard models feature a larger footprint and are designed with a deep CG for better playability and higher trajectories. The Tour models are designed with a smaller profile and a traditional hosel, and deliver increased workability with low, penetrating trajectories that are preferred by more accomplished players. Diablo Octane Fairway Woods feature aggressive Variable Face Technology(R) that increases the size of each club’s sweet spot and generates high ball speeds for better distance. Diablo Octane Fairway Woods will be available at the new product introduction retail price of $199.

About Forged Composite

Forged Composite is the lightest, strongest, most precise material Callaway has ever employed. Encompassing more than 500,000 intertwined turbostratic fibers per square inch, this revolutionary material features an incredibly high threshold for withstanding the extreme forces encountered by Lamborghini and Callaway products. Forged Composite is one-third the density of titanium, yet features a greater load carrying capacity per unit mass in bending. The implementation of a new, proprietary isothermal forging process enables Callaway and Lamborghini engineers to incorporate Forged Composite into their designs with a level of precision that was previously unachievable.

About The Callaway Golf-Automobili Lamborghini Partnership

On September 30, 2010, Callaway Golf and Automobili Lamborghini announced an agreement to connect the resources of their world-renowned Research and Development teams. This unique alliance establishes an ongoing partnership to develop innovative technologies and materials such as Forged Composite, the first collaborative element of this union.

The origins of this recently formalized relationship date back several years. Through the constant pursuit of lighter and stronger materials, the Lamborghini and Callaway Research and Development teams cultivated similar areas of expertise. A major point of convergence surrounded the development of advanced composite structures. These highly developed materials comprised of microscopic carbon fibers feature remarkable strength and performance characteristics in comparison to the metal alloys that are generally used throughout the automotive and golf industries.
