Tiger Shark Golf Releases Test Results For New PowerPod II Driver

Tiger Shark Golf's soon-to-be released PowerPod II driver was recently put to the test at one of the world's top club fitting specialists, and the results point to a home run for the Michigan based company.

Hot Stix Golf, based out of Scottsdale, recently tested the Jim Flood creation designed to be the world's first ever slice proof driver. Certified fitting experts at the Hot Stix outdoor facility put the PowerPod II up to scientific research featuring Doppler Radar technology, "TrackMan," which tracks the exact ball flight from launch to landing. TrackMan calculate a golfers various shot characteristics with unparalleled efficiency at 1 foot for every 100 yards.

"We tested the PowerPod on the TrackMan system and I was blown away by all of the information we were able to find out on our new design," said Tiger Shark Executive Vice President Ian Zubkoff. "I was equally impressed by the Hot Stix state-of-the-art facility and knowledgeable staff."

In this test, six golfers of different skill levels were chosen to hit the PowerPod II Driver. What stood out was the PowerPod's high smash factor combined with low spin rates, a combination that increases distance and promotes straighter shots. Testers had an average smash factor of 1.488, on par with the average PGA Tour player. Three of the testers experienced a 1.5 smash factor with the PowerPod II, a number considered to be "perfect".

"The numbers speak for themselves," said Hot Stix General Manager Mike Helfrich. "Those are PGA Tour caliber type numbers."

The tests also showed that the PowerPod II had an average spin rate of 2,461 rpm. The spin rate off a driver generally ranges between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm with the average PGA Tour player being around 2,700 rpm. This number allows the Power Pod II to tighten up dispersion while adding to the overall distance.

"In my over 20 years of working in the golf industry, I have never seen anything perform quite like the PowerPod," said Zubkoff. "We've had several PGA Tour players and Division I collegiate golfers test the Pod with exceptional results. What we found last week at the Hot Stix testing center confirmed what is becoming very apparent; the PowerPod II has the perfect launch and spin characteristics to help the vast majority of golfers hit the ball straighter and further."

Golfing Minorities In The News

Several golfing “minorities” have been in the news lately.

First, Chi Chi Rodriguez was honored by the US House of Representatives for assisting Latino and other at-risk youth.

Aside from my wondering why the Congress has the time to do such things, it’s a nice thing for Chi Chi.

Second, Sue Fisco, a businesswoman and teaching professional seemingly is on track to become the first female head of the PGA of America. She’s already distinguished herself as the first female member of the PGA Board of Directors.

Of course, Fisco isn’t technically a minority, since there were 155 million females to 151 million males in the US in 2009. But she surely is a minority in the golf world.

And finally, there’s going to be another African American on the PGA Tour next year. Joseph Bramlett—like Tiger, multiracial and Stanford educated—has made it through Q-School. That’s something Tiger didn’t have to do, and Bramlett becomes only the second African American to do so in twenty five years. The last was Adrian Stills.

PGA Tour Offers Olive Branch To Euros

Even as many of the best European players have decided to reject PGA Tour membership and stay closer to home this next year, the Tour has extended an olive branch. Normally, a player who has dropped their membership would be limited to ten starts in PGA Tour or PGA Tour co-sponsored events. Those co-sponsored events include the four majors, three World Golf Championship events and the Players. That leaves only two regular Tour event openings, and for Lee Westwood, that would have prevented him from defending his title in Memphis.

The sponsors of the Memphis event (which last year included PGA Tour bread-and-butter FedEx), could not have been happy about that. So, the Tour essentially decided to give Westwood a pass on the Players. With the new rules, teeing it up in the Players doesn’t count against your limit. Now, Westwood will be able to include Memphis on his list.

Four other players, including Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke also will be able to take advantage of the ruling.

Oddly, players who have never been a member can play in 12 events. Seems like there’s a little bit of a scored lover issue going on there.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (December 2, 2010) — TaylorMade Golf has re-imagined and redefined the forged iron with the introduction of three new and distinctly different models: TPMB (Tour Preferred® Muscleback), TPMC (Tour Preferred Muscle Cavity) and TPCB (Tour Preferred Cavityback).

The sophisticated design of each of the three new models incorporates specific features and technologies developed to promote improved superior performance. Created with major input from tour pros, each new iron is an exquisitely designed instrument that blends classic forged iron features with modern performance elements. The TPMB and TPMC are both created using a state-of-the-art shaping process and modern, 6-step forging procedure that results in pure feel. The TPCB employs a multi-material construction comprised of a forged face and cast body.

“Forged irons are typically devoid of performance technologies,” said Bret Wahl, senior director of iron, wedge and putter development. “Their compact and solid construction, with thin sole, thin topline, high CG location and little to no offset, forces a very specific type of impact parameters to hit a good shot, with virtually no margin for error. The reward for that sacrifice is unparalleled feel and workability. We took a long, close look into the makeup of forged irons to determine if we could advance the performance with the use of technology, and we found that we could.”

TPMB: Innovation in a Forged Muscleback

The Tour Preferred MB is a finely wrought muscleback blade expressly designed for the purist. With clear lines, a compact player’s shape and minimal offset, the TPMB delivers the pure feel, feedback and workability coveted by blade fans.

“This is the iron that many of our Tour Staff pros been waiting for,” said Keith Sbarbaro, TaylorMade’s vice president of tour operations. “The lines are clear and clean from every angle, and the pure feel of the ball on the forged face at impact is as good as it gets.”

The exclusive, 6-step forging process employed produces a more precisely shaped and finished head that looks and performs like a work of art. A thin topline, thin sole, straight leading edge, minimal offset and tapered hosel work in conjunction to promote the kind of pure face-to-ball connection sought after by skilled players.

In addition, the TPMB incorporates TaylorMade’s innovative new precision-weighting port in the back of the clubhead to solve an age-old problem. In the past, clubmakers have installed cartridges of varying weight in the hosel to assure that each iron in the set is of uniform swingweight. Doing so, however, affects the location of the CG in terms of its position between the toe and heel. The TPMB’s precision-weighting port guarantees precise swingweights while ensuring optimal and consistent CG location in every clubhead.

“The precision-weighting port proves that it is, in fact, possible to innovate and improve the performance of a true, forged blade,” said Brian Bazzel, manager of iron and wedge creation.

The TPMB also incorporates an advanced, USGA-conforming groove design to promote more spin and control from the rough, a crucial advancement in making it the ultimate player’s performance iron. The leading edge features minimal heel-to-toe radius with the ideal amount of camber to cut cleanly and precisely into the turf with little to no resistance.

The Tour Preferred CB is a multi-material forged cavityback that’s beautiful, powerful and playable. Designed with a two-piece head, the TPCB’s advanced construction melds a forged face with a cast body that incorporates an undercut cavity to deliver the pure feel of a forged iron and the forgiveness of a deep cavityback.

“Uniting a forged face with a cast cavity allows us to deliver the best of both worlds: the soft feel of a forging with the stability and forgiveness of a deep undercut cavity,” said Wahl.

The TPCB boasts the highest MOI of the three new irons. That, combined with its Inverted Cone Technology (the only iron of the three with ICT), which promotes faster ball speed on off-center hits, helps make the TPCB extremely forgiving for consistent distance from shot to shot.

The TPCB also features a precision-weighting port that guarantees consistent swingweight throughout the set while ensuring optimal CG location in every clubhead to promote optimal ball flight every iron.

Additionally, the TPCB features the same new, advanced groove design to promote more spin and control from the rough.

The TPCB irons is the only model of the three being offered in both steel and graphite shafts. The steel is a new, 110-gram, mid-flight True Temper Dynamic Golf XP, which is lighter and promotes higher flight compared to the standard Dynamic Gold steel shaft. The graphite shaft options, developed by Fujikura, are offered in 90-gram stiff flex and 80-gram regular flex. Tour Velvet grips are also standard.

Poulters Wins With Cobra Driver

CARLSBAD, CA (November 22, 2010) - Cobra Golf Tour Professional Ian Poulter captured the UBS Hong Kong Open with a 22-under-par 258 Sunday, securing the 11th position in the Official World Golf Ranking. Poulter's final-round 67 helped him claim his 10th win on the European Tour, after posting scores of 67, 60 and 64 in the first three rounds. The victory follows a T6 finish at the Barclays Singapore Open, an event Poulter won last year when he first put the Cobra ZL Driver in play.

Before arriving in Hong Kong, the 34-year-old Poulter was ranked No. 14 in the Official World Golf Ranking. But this victory moves him up three notches, and further fortified his confidence in his Cobra Golf equipment.

Online Tee Time Services Right For The Times

Digital Lifestyle, Consumer Trends Make Online Tee Time Services Right For The Times, According To Industry Panel At Golf Inc. Conference ORLANDO, Fla. (Nov. 22, 2010) - As golfers migrate toward a digital lifestyle and seek out easier ways to make choices, courses that make their tee times available online and use third-party distributors to augment their marketing have a competitive advantage, according to participants in a panel discussion at the Golf Inc. Conference in Las Vegas.

"We're in a time when there is an overabundance of information, but at the same time consumers are feeling more deprived of time than at any time in history," said Jon Last, president of Sports & Leisure Research Group. "As a result, they're looking for simplicity and options in the choices they make. Some of the things they value don't always lend themselves to the old ways of doing business in golf."

Last said the time pressures consumers feel and the number of choices they have for their leisure time and dollars argue for a larger marketing "footprint," which includes online tee time reservation services.

"Given this environment, where people are inundated by messages and their choices include not just where they might play golf, but if they're going to play golf, the greater presence you have and the more prominent the places where you're showing up, the easier you're going to be to find. Online services create a pull strategy as well as a push strategy."

"The biggest (feedback) we get from our players regarding the online service is convenience," said panel participant Greg Avant, owner and director of golf at the Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. "For them, to be able to go online and compare prices is very appealing. Price sensitivity is definitely part of the world we live in today."

Mike Loustalot, who co-founded Golf Channel's GolfNow.com online tee time service in 2002 and has been involved in marketing tee times online since 1998,, encouraged operators to show a representative sample of their tee time inventory online to give golfers more choices.

"I don't necessarily advocate showing all of your inventory at once, but you should have a broad enough selection of inventory on your site so a customer can make a decision to buy," Loustalot said. "The pricing of that inventory should vary according to dayparts and your patterns of play. I don't say show 248 times each day, but have times throughout the day, so people have a choice."

Henry-Griffitts Announces 2010 ClubFitter Awards

Maumee, Ohio -- Henry-Griffitts Limited, the premier custom-fit company in golf, has announced its 2010 awards. The categories for the awards include two Master Golf Clubfitter™, two Professional Golf Clubfitters® and two special awards.

Receiving the Master Golf Clubfitter honor was Kathy Jensen, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She started playing golf at the age of nine and has risen to the top of her profession. She is the 2010 Teacher of the Year in the PNWPGA (Pacific Northwest PGA) Island Empire Chapter, a PGA Class A Golf Professional member since 1990.

She is on staff at Randy Henry's Dynamic Golf Academy located at the Coeur d'Alene Resort and continues to play in local pro-ams and tournaments. Jensen has been fitting with Henry-Griffitts since 1990.

Also receiving the Master Golf Clubfitter honor was Jeff Mansfield from Wallacia, NSW, Australia. Jeff has been an H-G fitter for more than 10 years and a member of the Australian PGA since 1991. Mansfield is a Certified H-G Teaching Professional, Henry-Griffitts N.S.W. Regional Director and has been an AAA accredited golf professional for 13 years.

Among the requirements to become a Master Golf Clubfitter are (1) Henry-Griffitts Professional Golf Clubfitter status, (2) fitting with the Henry-Griffitts Precision Fitting Method for at least 48 months, (3) completing categories such as contributions to training, research, etc., (4) publishing a work related to clubfitting, (5) completing a Masters Thesis Paper, and (6) speaking publicly on any clubfitting topic or submitting a video tape on the subject.

Receiving the title of Professional Golf Clubfitter were Bill Phillips and Jon Wright. Bill owns Bill Phillips Golf, a teaching and clubfitting business operating out of Riverbend Golf Club in Fresno, California. He has been with H-G since 2003. Jon, who has been fitting with H-G since 1992, is a PGA Professional, teacher and coach at the Lake Hills Golf Course in Billings, Montana.

To qualify as a Professional Golf Clubfitter, a person must, among other things, currently be employed by an active account, have completed Henry-Griffitts School I and Super School, have been fitting with the Henry-Griffitts Precision Fitting Method a minimum 24 months, and have sold a minimum of 1,000 Henry-Griffitts clubs.

Bob Duncan of Tetherow Golf Club in Bend, Oregon was given the Randy Henry Award. This honor recognizes the teacher who, without fail, evaluates the student's equipment in lesson programs. The teacher always has the Teacher's Cart and lie board on the lesson tee and uses the golf club, as well as his knowledge of the swing motion, to improve the students' ball flight.

Duncan has been a PGA teaching professional for more than 25 years and a clubfitter with Henry-Griffitts since 1998. In 7 years as a Teacher/Clubfitter in Sacramento, California, Duncan custom fit more than $1.6 million in golf clubs and earned Master Golf Clubfitter status from Henry-Griffitts in 2003.

Kirk Smith of Mukilteo, Washington's Harbour Pointe Golf Club, received the Jim Griffitts Award. This honor is given to the person who embodies the highest standard of care and concern for his students' enjoyment and proficiency in golf. The award signifies the deepest respect and admiration the company can bestow.

Smith achieved Professional Golf Clubfitter status in 1998 and has been with the company since 1993. He has assisted in golf schools and teaching programs for 18 years and gives lessons. He's a certified personal fitness trainer, specializing in golf fitness.

Adventure Blog has a neat article covering a slew of new materials that will challenge Gore-Tex in the waterproof-breathable market. While the article is about camping equipment, you can be sure that it’ll find its way to golf.

For the past 30 years, the waterproof-breathable market could be summed up in two words (or is that one hyphenated one?): Gore-Tex. No more. Gore’s might is about to be tested by no less than three of the outdoor world’s largest brands. The roll-out begins this spring with Columbia’s Omni-Dry then flows through to fall 2011 when Polartec’s NeoShell and Mountain Hardware’s DryQ arrive. And Gore itself isn’t sitting still, with a new product, Active Shell, the promises greater breathability. It’s the biggest wave of new waterproof-breathables from major brands in, well, ever.

Ping S56 Irons Notch Two Wins

November 17, 2010; Phoenix, Arizona -- Two more wins last weekend on the LPGA and Sunshine Tours gave the new PING® S56™ irons 12 victories worldwide since the players' style model first arrived on Tour in late June, the company announced today.

The wins have come in eight countries, including the United States (4 wins), France (2), Switzerland (1), Scotland (1), Spain (1), South Africa (1), Mexico (1) and Singapore (1).

"We've never seen such instant acceptance and success for a new product on Tour," said PING Chairman & CEO John Solheim. "We're extremely pleased so many players have switched and seen immediate results. Our Tour reps are getting a lot of requests for the S56 irons right now from players all over the world. We're more than happy to accommodate all the requests."

PING pro In-Kyung (I.K.) Kim was the first to win on the LPGA Tour with the S56 irons last week at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. The 22-year-old South Korean fired a final-round 64 for a record-setting 19-under total. The winner of the BMG Classic on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa last weekend also relied on the new irons, putting them in the bag for the first time only hours before the first round.

In a remarkable gesture, Kim donated her $220,000 winner's check to two charities, including $110,000 to the Lorena Ochoa Foundation.

"When I read that I.K. had donated all of her winnings, I was touched by her incredible generosity," said Solheim. "She was inspired to make the donation after meeting some of the children who attend a school set up by Lorena and her foundation. We're proud to be associated with players like I.K. and Lorena who recognize the opportunity they have to give back to the game."

More than 40 Tour players worldwide have switched to the S56 irons since they debuted at Pebble Beach during the U.S. Open. Three PING professionals, including Gregory Havret and Louis Oosthuizen, put the new irons straight in the bag that week. Havret went on to place second, finishing one shot back. A month later, Oosthuizen dominated the British Open, winning by seven shots using the S56 irons. Three of the victories have come on the PGA Tour, where the new irons became the most-used model of any PING iron by the end of the season.

Dixon Golf Recycles More Than 10,000 Golf Balls at the Fiesta Bowl Million Dollar Hole in One Challenge TEMPE, AZ - The count is in, and it totals more than 10,000 golf balls. This year Dixon Golf collected more than 10,000 golf balls at the Fiesta Bowl Million Dollar Hole in One Challenge held at the Arizona Biltmore.

"We knew it was time for the Fiesta Bowl to get new golf balls for the challenge. Our goal in partnering with the Fiesta Bowl Million Dollar Hole in One Challenge was to recycle their used golf balls and provide them with new environmentally friendly Dixon Earth balls, "says Dixon Golf CEO William Carey.

Dixon Golf also partnered with the Challenge to create a recycling program to get golfers to recycle their old golf balls. For recycling 12 used golf balls, a player got one free bag of balls when they paid for the first.

The golf balls collected from the Fiesta Bowl Million Dollar Hole in One Challenge will first be used in a floating sign for Waste Management at the Phoenix Open on the water on the 18th hole at the TPC in Scottsdale before being recycled.
