Golfing Minorities In The News

December 8, 2010

Several golfing “minorities” have been in the news lately.

First, Chi Chi Rodriguez was honored by the US House of Representatives for assisting Latino and other at-risk youth.

Aside from my wondering why the Congress has the time to do such things, it’s a nice thing for Chi Chi.

Second, Sue Fisco, a businesswoman and teaching professional seemingly is on track to become the first female head of the PGA of America. She’s already distinguished herself as the first female member of the PGA Board of Directors.

Of course, Fisco isn’t technically a minority, since there were 155 million females to 151 million males in the US in 2009. But she surely is a minority in the golf world.

And finally, there’s going to be another African American on the PGA Tour next year. Joseph Bramlett—like Tiger, multiracial and Stanford educated—has made it through Q-School. That’s something Tiger didn’t have to do, and Bramlett becomes only the second African American to do so in twenty five years. The last was Adrian Stills.

The take away

A slight forward press before performing the "little shot" is your cue to start the take away.

Even a slight transfer of weight to the front foot and then moving your weight back to your back foot is a great way to feel in sync with your take away.

So simply take your stance, move weight to the front foot at the same time perform your forward press. Then cock your wrists under and at the same time move or shift your weight to your back foot.

So practise moving weight to front and cocking your wrists and moving your weight to your back foot.

Your "left shoulder" is responsible for taking your hands to the top of your swing. The little shot practised regulary will enable you to create a very natural takeaway. I notice students who take a very rigid and almost robot approach to the takeaway. This approach is fine when learning the wrists movement and weight shifts. But the quicker you can introduce some fluidity to your takeaway the better. No stiff Boards or you wont be able to turn.

Recapping

The little shot must be played by taking the wrists under and the club head being taken back on a straight line. In the full takeway you may only be able to go back straight for about 2-5 inches before your turning shoulders will take over to create a circle for your backswing.

Your left leg should also be a bit straighter as your shoulders will have a tilt in them. Left shoulder higher than right for right handers.

Your right knee will have a slight bend due to you moving your right hand to the stationary club and fitting your body to this position. Your right knee will be kicked in a little. (Towards the ball)

Remember forward press cock, weight shift and shoulder turn, that's all there is to it.

Can you Move your Head and still hit the Ball?

YES you can.

However most club golfers who MOVE their heads create fat or topped shots on a consistant basis. You reduce your accuracy of your shots when you move your head.

If your goal is to bring the golf club back to your original set up position you should NOT move your head. Why would you want to create a extra movement and instantly take yourself out of alignment.

The POLE drill is an excellent drill to train your feet, Knees, Hips and lastly your shoulders to make a great turn without moving your head.

The great thing about our swing is our understanding of the "Swing Circle Centre" that is located at the back of your neck. From this swing circle centre we turn and rotate around this FIXED POINT. It does not move.

For more consistent and solid shot's use the "pole drill" without moving your head. If you find a restriction in regards to your backswing accept at the present as you will be able to still make a very solid golf swing.

Time and time again I have seen golfers hit the ball more consistently with shorter back swings. Shoulder height is really all you need to get to. STRAINING to get to parallel or trying to turn further generally results in golfers MOVING off the ball. Mentally saying to themselves "the further I turn back the further I will hit the ball"!!!!

Extending the arc of your swing does create an opportunity to hit the ball further as you have more time to generate club head speed. BUT DON'T move your head in the process. You will kill your golf shot and cause yourself a hell of alot of frustration.

To hit further swing shorter, stay within your current flexability. Use the pole drill often to exercise your body and in grain the proper movements.

DON'T MOVE YOUR HEAD.

A right Upper Cut versus a right Hook

Out again with another golf student today. She had a beautiful golf swing that we had developed for her using the 21st Century golf swing method.

But like anything golf things do fall apart at the seams when we ignore or forget about the basics. After watching a couple of swings I noticed she was drawing the ball rather strongly, not quite a hook just a big draw.

We started with her grip then her stance and then her takeway. Everything was fine so we practised the little shot. Again nice and crisp. Then we moved to the 1/2 shot again nice and crisp.

Okay then we went to the 3/8 shot with weight shift and hello, the little big draw showed up uninvited!!!

Automatically the alarm bells went off and I could see the problem. I asked her to picture herself as a prize fighter and that her favourite punch was going to be a very strong right upper cut.

So she went through her routine, got to the top of her swing, followed the moving plane and just before impact threw a beautiful right upper cut that sent the ball long and straight.

What she was doing...... which is a major mistake in this swing was just before impact she would throw a right hook, which made her hands cross over and caused her shoulders to open or turn too much.

We don't want the shoulders to turn!!!! We want them to go up and down. The hands TURN the club head through the ball.

So next time you are at the driving range try this technique. Remember right upper cut NOT right hook.

Moving golf plane

I completed a very good day of golf instruction today with a 24 handicapper.

Dave is a high profile business person who is very successful and respected within the building trade.

He purchased "How to kill the Ball" course from me. The book and 3 DVD's. After about 4 days we got together to discuss his golf swing and practice at the local driving range.

We started the golf lesson by looking at the grip and from here I asked Dave to hit the little shot. The little shot allows golfers to develop the feel of the golf club in their hands and to also understand what part the wrists play in the 21 century golf swing.

After hitting some very crisp little shots we moved to the half shot and then to the 3/4 shots.
Again his striking the ball was very crisp and straight.

The main reason that Dave had success in swing the golf club, was the fact that I got him to understand the moving plane that we teach our students. Yes there is not one plane or 2 planes just one "moving plane".

Understanding this moving plane allowed Dave to hit his straightest irons he has ever hit. His distance with the wedge through to the 7 iron were very consistent. (Something that he had not experienced before) He even had the cheek to pull out a 4 iron which he never hits and deliver a very straight and long ball. (Okay he duffed the first one, but nailed the second)

I am convinced that if golfers gain an understanding of the moving plane of the golf swing, they will learn one of the secrets to their golf swing.

The moving plane concept is a big topic and discussed at length in the 21st Century golf swing

Roll over or Roll under

The new golf swing instruction by Dan Shauger has caused quite a stir amongst golfers and golf instructors alike.

He advocates a under arm style of releasing the golf club, yes under arm. The conventional wisdom is the roller over of the forearms. This new style of releasing the wrists under and through has a huge amount of credability.

Why?

Because it reduces potentially errors substantially. Imagine a straight up and down action versus a side to side action. If you can get that concept you will begin to understand how this new thinking will inspire changes in golf instruction.

However because of Marketing constraints and old fashion thinking it will take sometime to turn golfers around to the new 21st Century golf swing.
